Demons

Recently in my work I've been exploring working with sin, pleasures and questioning morality. We all have weird little things that make us tick, or ones that make us want to look away, so wheres the limit? So I've been working loose, going by instinct and playing around with mark making. With these images I took inspiration from the Rorschach test, playing on your psych and finding your demons. So what do you see?

Anatomy and Textures

I'm currently working on some comic book covers and wanted to move away from the classic hero line art. So what better way then indulge in some gritty freehand drawing. The comic has themes of death, demons and sin, so I wanted to reflect this on the cover. The characters are complex and well developed through the story so I thought creating more textures and layers on the cover felt right. So normally I create a full piece and don't actually do rough sketches or just practice my technique, so the below drawings are drawn from books I have. 

It was really fun to just focus on minor details instead of considering the whole image as it's already there. I now definitely recommend using references! The books I used are Cabinets of Wonder and Visceral Pleasures which contains Vaughan Oliver's art. These books are great to use as a visual reference, perfect for when you hit an art block and need to get inspired (I also recommend going for a walk!).

Stuck

Here's a little messy poem I wrote today and it's called Stuck,

dont sleep so the day wont come sooner
birds chirping own world separate to ours
no life just constant
constant reeling on a lack of movement
like a picture book

not a pretty one
with mashed mashed spark of creativity
gone

flash before your eyes
one hour euphoric
the rest lies still

yearn to be like them
avoid the inevitable self destruct

delinquent self made enemy
but

im not hurting you
just me

If you want a little context for the poem, it's 6am, and I'm in a state of neither moving forward nor backward, just kind of floating around and avoiding a lot of issues that need to be dealt with. Which essentially leads to letting people down, which I don't want to do. I've whittled the main body of this poem into a little lesson for myself: hiding leads to more hiding until you become the shadow of you. Which isn't good when somebody turns out the light.

So it all starts great, cutting out all the negativity in your life, freeing the ties. But then you start to get a little carried away with yourself and start to cut out some important bits that you kind of have to do as an independent adult. Which ultimately develops an unhealthy habit of running away instead of facing the problem, probably something we've all been a little guilty of at some point.

An effective solution to this seems to be asking for help or admitting defeat, rolling over and letting capable hands take over. It seems to always boil down to my same internal conflict of a stubborn 'make do and mend' strong woman and a lost little girl who just wants to be looked after. The little voice in my head is constantly telling me to sort it out, I'm trying, and I'll get there some day.

So honey, get on with it, even if it feels like your drinking molasses.

IKEA does street art

On the 1st April 2015 IKEA are launching a diverse poster collection bringing an urban sub-culture normally reserved to the streets, into people's homes. Commissioning some raw talent from around the world to create 12 street art posters. that bring a piece of rebellion, normally found on the likes of Berlin side streets into everyday lives.  

The popularity of street art is rising, moving into the high class art world. IKEA in a way are fighting against it becoming a luxury commodity purchased in the latest art show. They are keeping it rebellious, street art is meant to be free or in this case, at only €15 a poster, it's affordable for those who appreciate the awesome art but can't afford the high class price tags. I know I'm going to grab one.

Faith 47

Introducing you to Faith 47, the ever evasive street artist who works all over the world producing amazing artworks packed full of emotion. She works on a huge scale using spray paint and acrylic and the quality is as epic as the size.

Choosing run down derelict building walls as canvases she brings dull urban areas to life, reflecting the people who reside there, there's a lot more to these blocks than bricks and mortar. She doesn't try to cover up or hide the cracks in the walls or flakes in the paint, she embraces it, grunge and all, and it really brings more elements and depth to the work. The beautiful pieces bring a much injection of actual life into the cityscape, it's there to be seen and admired, and not to advertise the false.
